The Training Partner: Best Friend or Worst Nightmare?

A good training partner can be a great asset to your training but if you get stuck with a bad one, it could lead you down the road to frustration.Be selective when choosing a training partner. Not every person is a good one (some can be downright horrible!).

Here a few things to look out for:

1.

Punctual - Nothing is more frustrating than waiting to start a workout when you're ready to go but your partner is late.

2.Dependable - Choose someone who you are sure will show up for every scheduled workout or who will call you if they can't make it.It is a drain on your valuable energy (especially before training) to have to constantly remind and harass.

3.No personality conflict - It is obviously not a good idea to train with someone who annoys you, unless of course you want to focus that negative energy into your training. If you dread going to work out because you can't stand your partner, soon you may not work out at all.

4.Similar strength levels - Look for someone who is at the same or a little above your strength level. When your strength is the similar, you won't have to constantly switch weights. If they are stronger, it will motivate you to use heavier weights.

It is okay to lift with someone who is much stronger or much weaker than you, but be prepared to do a lot of weight switching.

5.Training level - If you are a beginner, try to find someone who knows what they are doing. You will get more out of your training than if you train with another beginner.

6.Motivation - Find someone with a similar motivation level as you.It you are gung-ho and your partner is ho-hum, you will be dragged down and your progress will suffer. If you are both "psycho," you can get some incredible workouts though!

If you are moderately intense and lift with someone who is much more intense and willing to drive you, it can spur you onto much greater intensity.

7.Attitude - Get a partner with a positive attitude. This is very important. If they constantly say that something is impossible or that they can't or you can't do something, you may end up believing them.Do not train with someone who is satisfied with no improvement.

8.Open mind - Get a partner with an open mind.Someone who has to do things his or her way all the time, will not listen to you and will not change his or her mind is not a good partner to have.

In every partnership, one person will tend to be the leader. The leader should take into account the needs and feelings of the other partner not totally ignore them.

9.Overpartnering - Do not get too many training partners.Sometimes a group of friends want to work out together.

This is okay if there aren't too many of you.You won't get a good workout if you always have to wait for your partners to do their sets and you will probably end up talking too much.Three in a group is probably the most you can deal with and even that is probably pushing it.

10.Spotting - Get someone you feel comfortable with spotting you.One of the main roles of a training partner is spotting and if you don't trust them, there's not much point in having them around to help.

11.Male/female training partners - Members of the opposite gender often make excellent training partners.Showing off is good motivator for using heavier weights or working harder. One of the obvious drawbacks might be the differing amounts of weight used.

If there is only one bench press available and one benches 300 pounds while the other benches 95 pounds, changing the weight is going to take awhile. This can be solved by having one person doing dumbell presses on the same bench rather than barbell presses.

While there are a number of advantages to having a training partner such as spotting, motivation, and companionship, there are also advantages to working alone, e.g.self-reliance, self-focus, no hassles over schedule, no one to wait for, etc.In the end, it is really up to you whether or not you want or need a training partner.

Low Carb Diets - Do They Work?

For decades if not centuries, the belief was that if you stopped eating fatty foods you would lose weight, but that other foods (healthier foods) were completely okay. However, this entire belief was thrown for a loop when some individuals started inventing low carb diets - diets that had no carbohydrate rich foods like bread, rice, pasta, as well as some vegetables and fruit - all of which seemed to be very effective at helping people lose weight.

The Atkins Diet, for example, was a diet that had 0 carbohydrates but a great deal of fatty foods like meats, high protein foods as well as healthier foods like fruit. That diet was considered an amazing phenomenon, because individuals that tried it seemed to shed pounds at a rapid pace, going from large to thin in just a few months.

However, carbohydrates have always been known as important for your body to work correctly. So these diets have come under intense scrutiny, especially about their safety and the ability to keep weight off.

Do the Diets Work?

Low carb diets do work quickly.People that want to lose weight fast are better known to lose weight quickly on a low carb diet than on regular low fat, low calorie diets. However, in some ways the data is misleading.

Low carb diets cause:

1.

A loss in the amount of water weight you have because the low number of carbohydrates in your body cause it to burn a chemical called glycogen.Glycogen contains a great deal of water, so you are losing water from your body as well.

2.Increased Fullness - Most people that have low carb diets report less hunger and often feel full easier and for longer during the day.Because of this, few of them tend to overeat, which obviously caused a great deal of weight gain.

3.Less Calories - Less calories does equal less weight gain, and carbohydrates have calories.Reducing your caloric intake means that you are going to see weight loss in the low carb diets.

If you will notice, however, there is not a lot of loss of body fat in your body. With the exception of reducing your calories, you are really just eating less (which most people should do anyway) and losing water weight (which may or may not be healthy.

Risks and Safety

In addition, there are a lot of red flags about the safety of a low carb diet.

Very little is known about the health of these diets because they are all relatively new, however a few things can be garnered simply by common sense:

1.

Carbohydrates are necessary for energy. Most likely if you are now eating enough carbohydrates, you are not exercising much, in which case while you may look healthy, your heart and muscles are likely very negatively affected by the lack of physical activity.
2.High fat foods are going to be high in bad fats, as well as cholesterol, which can cause some severe health problems, including increased risk for heart attack and high blood pressure.
3.Carbohydrates have always been a part of your life, since early man.Taking them out of your diet altogether can potentially cause a number of health problems down the road even beyond the increased heart attack risk - and these will not be known because the diets are too new to research over the long term.

While these diets have shown some strong efficacy, they have potential risks. In general, a low fat, high exercise diet is going to be healthier, and poses no known risks in the short or long term.

Bruxism: When Grinding Your Teeth Becomes a Serious Condition

Almost everyone grinds their teeth once in a while. It is also common for people to clench their teeth and jaw on occasion. But when the clenching and grinding began happening unconsciously, this can represent a more serious condition known as Bruxism.

Bruxism usually takes place at night while the patient is sleeping.Because the grinding is most often an unconscious reaction, often the sufferer will not realize they are doing it until they began experiencing unusual or painful symptoms of the jaw, teeth and face.

The most common early symptoms of Bruxism are unexplained morning headaches and sore jaw muscles. There may also be some sensitivity in the teeth, and even earaches and soreness of the facial muscles.

In most cases, Bruxism is not a serious condition, and usually only represents a phase a person is going through because of stressful situations at home or work, or other types of unresolved conflict. But if the grinding begins occurring more often, or more severely, it can become a more serious medical problem.

As you would expect, the constant grinding can damage the enamel of the teeth, and even result in tooth loss. But it can also affect your jaw, and in severe cases, causes damage to the jawbone itself.Long-term grinding of the teeth has also been known to contribute to hearing loss, TMJ, and damage to tooth implants, bridges and crowns.

There is even some evidence that the chronic teeth grinding of severe cases of Bruxism can damage the muscles of the face, changing the sufferer's appearance.

The most common way to prevent Bruxism is by using a mouth guard, which can be custom fitted by your dentist. While these guards do not cure the condition, they at least protect the enamel of the teeth from further damage.

The most common treatment for Bruxism is to address the psychological issues which may be causing the grinding to begin with.Anxiety and stress counseling are often recommended, and in some cases anger management therapy may be in order. The idea is to get to the root of the unresolved conflict or underlying hostility that leads to the act of grinding the tea while sleeping.

There are also self-help methods to combat the effects of Bruxism, including using relaxation techniques, breathing exercises and yoga to reduce the overall level of stress.Cutting back on nicotine and especially caffeine is also important for people suffering with Bruxism, as these substances tend to increase the level of cortisol in the body, which adds to an overall feeling of stress.

Additionally, it is recommended that people suffering with Bruxism do not chew gum, or eat hard candies. These things can put additional pressure on the jaw muscles, and often make Bruxism worse.

Massage therapy is also useful for many people.A therapeutic massage of the neck, face and shoulders can help to dissolve stress and minimize the chances of clenching or grinding the teeth at night.

There are also herbal teas and supplements that are sometimes used to help unwind and relax before going to bed.Natural supplements such as chamomile (taken in tea form) are reputed to be excellent calling agents, and can help Bruxism sufferers relax and get a better night's sleep.

One other useful tip for Bruxism is to use a warm compress over the jaw on both sides of the face for 10 to 15 minutes before going to bed. Many users believe that the warm sensation relaxes the job muscles and reduces the incidence of teeth grinding while they sleep.

Manifesting new relationships

When eager to manifest new relationships (and this is always necessary at some point in our lives) we must be ready to accept change and respect newness.Whether in our personal world or our business world, we often feel the need to develop new relationships.

Attract new relationships

Instead of trying to find new people, develop the capacity to attract them.

Having said that, necessary actions must be taken in order to open you to being in the right place at the right time.

This could mean attending networking events or social and organizational events in your geographical area.It may mean that you simply pay attention to those people you chance to meet in your day-to-day affairs.

Open your heart center

By continually remembering to keep your heart center activated, you will begin to receive signs from those you are attracting.

Your heart center has ‘psychic receptor sites' so that you will know when you are meeting like-minded persons. This is not something new.You have always had the ability to receive the feeling of warmth, belongingness and satisfaction when you are with certain people.

Follow through with your feelings and you will begin manifesting new relationships.Your body gives clues: you may feel comfortable, exhilarated, inspired, feelings of oneness as well as other feelings that have been activated between you and your potential new relationship.

Some relationships will be enduring and others will be for just a short time. When you pay close attention, even the new short-lived relationships will often bring you something you need in the way of information, inspiration, to fulfill karmic experiences or to have other types of experiences that your soul wants you to have.

Be the person you want to attract

In order to attract attractive people, you must be attractive.

To attract powerful people, you must be powerful. To attract committed people, you must be committed. What you are becoming, you will attract, so it makes good sense to involve yourself in some personal development activities.

Personal development activities can include many things but highly recommended is the ability and discipline to pray and/or meditate on a regular basis.Getting to know your soul - the highest aspect of yourself - brings to the fore all of your good and divine qualities. These qualities are the stuff that attracts new relationships with people who have good and divine qualities. When two persons meet and both have good and divine qualities, magic can happen - on a personal level, a business level or community level, for the greatest good of all.

What is your inner posture?

On a practical level, when meeting someone new, be aware of your inner posture as well as your outer posture.Your voice will reveal to the other person your level of respect, your interest in them by the way you listen to them and your level of oneness and acceptance of them just as they are today.

When in a networking situation and connecting with a person, focus on how you can help them.

Make sure you are listening intently to them when you are face to face.Learn how to ask good questions. Before departing, get their e-mail address or other contact information.Electronic communication is less invasive and quicker than a phone call; however, phone calls are appropriate under many circumstances.

Send them additional contacts, a website, a tip, a telephone number or anything that you connected with initially.Cast away any fears of actually connecting with that person again - the sooner the better.

Experiment.Write down on paper the qualities that you want in your new relationship - one relationship at a time.Look at that paper daily and visualize your new relationship walking toward you while you are feeling the feelings you want to feel in that relationship.Continue doing this daily until someone happens to show up in your life.At that time, you know you are manifesting new relationships - all by your own design and powers of attracting that which you seek.
